Had a few questions about the thermostat housing. First, what is the piece that screws into the side? Looks like some sort of sensor but wasn't connected to anything? (See picture) and then I plan to buy a new one. Autozone has a torqflo housing but how does that compare to the bronco graveyard one?
Looks like a coolant temperature sender unit. Who ever installed it didn't realize they are getting the temperature of the coolant in the hose not the coolant of the engine.
That sender should be screwed into the intake not there.
Confirmed that it is the engine temp (coolant) sender and yes, a better location is on the intake. About $8.
If running add-on gauges, I'd put the OEM sender (or switch if an idiot light-equipped) in the water neck (as shown) and more accurate analog sender in the intake.
TIP: Drill a 1/8-inch hole on the thermostat's flange to allow trapped air to escape... and on an FE, orient that hole in the 12 o'clock position since the thermostat flange is vertical.
FE motor? I bought mine at Oreilly along with a 180° Murray brand thermostat.
Yeah sorry, it's a 360. I thought I read somewhere about 160,180,190 thermostats but that might have been in my 97-03 forum browsing. Anyway i found 2 for this truck one said it opens up at 180 no matter the rpms and the other said you can use with any temp... Not sure which is better?
