Hi I have strong smell of petrol when I open the windows its fine when closed and I am running LPG so its not fuel from carb area.
The fuel cap is screw in but has a spring loaded flap for filling with out removing cap.
Wonder if this is problem
Tank is plastic and can see no leaks,
Anyone else had this problem?
Cheers
Paul
Welcome to the forum. There is not much to go on to determine what your problem may be.
What model truck are you asking about?
What fuel system modifications have been made?
What engine are you running?
Is the smell of petroleum, gasoline, diesel, LPG, other?
Tell us a bit more about the truck, please.
Is the smell always there or only when the engine is running? Where is your exhaust exit? Post some pictures of this LPG system please.
Truck is 55 f100 gas tank under drivers floor as per original location.
Tank is plastic and has concealed filler under flap in original position.
The cap is screw in with quick fill cap which doesn't need to be removed to insert pump.
The engine is 302 Mustang with Holley 1850 4 bbl carb.
The smell is petroleum and only present when driving the log system is twin point atomiser on top of carb.
I start and run on lpg and fuel is shut off to carb by solenoid.
Therefore I do not suspect smell from carb as it is empty of fuel. When window opened vacuum caused which sucks petrol fumes in ?
It does have twin side exhausted in front of rear wheels. All I smell out there is burnt log no petrol which would be expected if on gas.
Thanks
Paul
Paul I am assuming you are not in the USA, I am not familiar with "log" sorry is this just a typo for LPG? The gas tank under the floor I assume is a pressure tank for the LPG? The truck only runs LPG or is there also a separate gasoline tank? Sorry I am not extremely familiar with LPG vehicles.

Hi sorry typo damn iPhone! No the tank under floor is petrol and I have a lpg tank under bed at rear petrol is very expensive in uk lpg is less than half price so makes sense. I had 2 F15o supercharged running lpg too.
It's recommended to start on petrol and switch to lpg when warm but mine runs ok from cold just little flat spot for few miles
Hmm ok, so maybe try to smell around near the tank lid to see if that is where the smell is coming from?
Is the exhaust running near the Petrol tank causing it to heat up and fume out?
What kind of fuel system do you? Could it be pressurizing the tank and causing it to fume out? Do you have any pictures of your truck and the system you can email me and I will post them here for you?
Hey Pawmaro,
Welcome Aboard. Nice to see UK truck guy on here.
We experienced a lot of fumes from our gas tank as well - very strong
in the garage. My wife didn't like the smelly old thing.. So.. We went to a
salvage yard & found a charcoal canister off an old van. We then ran our gas
tank vent hose over to this charcoal canister instead of just directly out into the air.... much nicer.
Hey Jules,
The original tanks are vented through the fill tube with a vented gas cap.
My wife was not a fan of old trucks venting smelly gas fumes into the garage.
We ended up moving the stock '50 tank out of the cab & put a '70 mustang tank
under the bed out back. We vented that tank with a rollover vent & then ran a tube
from that to a charcoal canister - we also use a non vented gas cap.
I agree. It sounds like a tank vent or fuel cap problem. The old tanks did not have a vent rather used the caps with a diaphragm that allowed air in as you used fuel but kept fumes from escaping the other way. Kind of like a low pressure check valve.
Paul, since you are keeping us in the dark regarding a description of your truck we are just guessing. Pictures help too.
