Ok so I decided enough was enough with the truck and that I would finally get around to tracking down my electrical gremlin.
I repaired three completely exposed wires (one was the main power wire off of the generator) and replaced a few butt connectors with solder and heat shrink and one especially frustrating length of wire with three butt connectors holding the thing together
So here are some pictures of loose wires I found while rooting around in there. I know it is dirty, but all the oil is old. I plugged the leaks when I bought it and never got around to cleaning.
Wires everywhere. I need to loom this mess.
First two danglers. They come out of the connector in the next picture.....
Two wires on the right are loose, the one on the left is connected to..... next picture
Right here. Can I cut the other two off? Should I just zip tie them to the fender?
Passenger side firewall, single wire connector comes out of main harness and I can't see anything it should be attached to...
Another look at the single connector.
I will have some other pictures of the other connectors that aren't attached to anything probably tomorrow morning.
I think that single connector is for an under hood light.
[QUOTE=X2 on the single connector, don't worry about it. Check all grounds.[/QUOTE]
Thanks guys!
How many grounds are there on this truck? Or better said, how many should there be?
I've been really busy and away from the house the last few days, haven't had a chance to work on anything. I'll hopefully get to it after I get back from Canada next Friday.
In the first pictures, that looks like the engine gauge feed harness. One wire should go to the "+" side of the coil. From the pictures I would say that there was an issue with the ignition coil resistor wire sometime in the past and it's been bypassed with the external resistor. The two "danglers" should be for the oil pressure sending unit and the temperature sender.

That would make a lot of sense. There is an aftermarket oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temp gauge in the truck and the stock ones don't work. Thanks Mike!
As far as the ignition coil resistor, is the external one ok or should it have been replaced?

As long as it's working okay, you aren't going for a concourse restoration, or you're not obsessively OCD, you can leave it. Replacing the resistor wire that it bypasses is a real pain. To do it to concourse standards would pretty much mean replacing the underdash wiring harness .
