Ok did some searching and did not have luck on finding a solid answer. Can anyone tell me what's needed to be done to retain the rear did and add an aftermarket headunit/dvd player. Thanks in advance.
Yes, you can still keep the rear DVD player. I could run everything from my Alpine. The audio shop had to plug into the front of the DVD player using the plugs. I wanted a cleaner look, but I was told that was my only option.
I was able to keep the rear DVD with my Kenwood install, however the lower plate with the headphone jacks is no longer functional. Keeping my eyes open for a new style with the infrared headphones to swap out.

I just posted in the other thread on front page about this. I bought a set of 4 infrared headphones of Amazon. My rear display is supposed to be capable of infrared but looks like my Pioneer head unit may not be hooked up in the back properly to enable dual zone. Haven't tried pulling g that out to check yet because I really don't know how to....Eventually will take to Best Buy or somewhere to let someone else troubleshoot.

If your display has the two black sections and the bottom left and bottom right you should be able to get the wireless headphones working. As far as I can remember that is a completely seperate circuit and does not interact with the head unit at all.
Ahh, that being the case you should be able to tie into the display and use it as an input into the aftermarket radio. I know it's possible on the radio I installed on our EX.
