C'mon California...

There's a few O'Reilly's near my town. One of them is a "High Performance" Store with floor space dedicated to Hot Rod stuff. It's been pretty handy. A few weeks ago, I needed Break-in Oil. The shelf was empty. I dropped by today... none. I asked about it and was told California ordered it pulled from their Inventory....Really? After bumping around the Web, I noted they now refer to it as "Non-California" Oil.

Yeah, I have a few bottles of Zinc Additive though non-detergent oil seems scarce. I ordered Comp-Cams Break-in and Street Rod Oils from Summit with a few extra items to exceed 100 Bones so the shipping was free.

I'm registered with the SEMA Action Network (SAN) and participate in their efforts to combat Zealot Legislation seeking to kill Vintage Iron and meddle in our hobby. I recycle all of my vehicle fluids, paint, fluorescent bulbs, electronics etc. Didn't see this one coming though....

Why do you guys put up with that foolishness? I know the weather is nice, and there is a lot of opportunity in California, but is it worth the constant barrage of ridiculous regulations and just generalized wimpy, whiny foolishness that makes the rest of the country shake its head in disbelief? Your property taxes are off the charts, your fuel prices are in the ozone layer, you have to win the lottery to afford a house there, emission regulations are mind-boggling, the cost of living in general is just astronomical, and you have a bunch of Hollywood nuts who have nothing to do other than sit around and figure out their next little "save the world" strategy that will make it even harder on John Q. Public. I've visited California. Yes, it's nice. It's beautiful. The weather is great (until one of those fire storms goes through and wipes out a bazillion dollars worth of houses built essentially in the desert). But good grief I'd rather live in a place where my essential human liberties are not constantly being attacked. My aunt was a native Californian. She finally said enough is enough and moved to Tennessee. They've never been so happy as they are now. Sorry. Rant over. Everyone go back to their coffee and donuts this morning.

Well said, my friend.
Edit: The mentioned state is of the same mindset as those who would dream up that wonderful, highly successful, Cash for Clunkers program. I wonder just how many perfectly serviceable vehicles came to an early end. I know of one.

Stated it before but worth repeating, elections have consequences. That "free" stuff dangling from one hand distracts people from the sucker punch that follows.

I've lived in northern California my entire life. I agree, the regulations and emission requirements are terrible. I don't like them. Painting a car in a garage these days is very risky. Our pump gas is terrible. Our strict emissions requirements have driven up prices through the roof on things like paint work, and chrome plating. Most people, including myself, cannot afford that type of work anymore.

I can only speak for myself. Since being here my entire life I don't know anything different. Plus there is the general view, at least amongst people I know, that if you leave you financially will never be able to move back.

I used to use isopropyl alcohol to clean parts before painting. The last time I went to order it from McMaster Carr they told me sorry, can't sell it in CA any more. New laws on VOCs. Jeez, on alcohol? Thing is, the law does not distinguish what type of molecules they are. Any product that produces any type of volatile organics is banned. You can still get alcohol at Home Depot, but it is heavily watered down. The cutting and tapping fluids I used to use are also banned.

Yeah, I placed an order with Summit Racing yesterday. To get over the $100 for free shipping I included one quart of Grease and Wax Remover. To my surprise they could not ship that to California. But I can walk in to my local paint store and buy it.

California used to be fairly conservative, if you can believe that. And it still is in many ways, but all branches of government are controlled oftentimes by the extreme wing of leftists, these ain't yer daddy's Democrats. Leftism is basically a type of mental disorder. Very sad.

I'm assuming you're making a general statement toward society in general and not to me in particular. Otherwise, I assure you--I DO NOT vote for liberals. And, yes, I do pay attention.

And, yes, those people in California do have a choice. They can fight back against those fools, or they can leave the state and go someplace else. One of these days, the bubble is going to burst.

Fight back how? They can't vote their way out. Most of the problem is known as regulatory capture anyway. There is no accountibility or feedback mechanism. It's unelected bureaucrats as far as the eye can see. Nobody actually votes on any of it, nothing ever gets rolled back, it only ratchets one way. Leaving the state is an option for some. They are working on that too, in terms of taxation. Total disaster.

Yet another example of the unregulated regulation and overreach without oversight.

Sad. And scary.

True, I never have seen opportunities to vote on any new regulations. It just seems to happen. I'm not by any means defending any of it. But I was under the impression California's dense population has some effect on the emission regulations we have. For example, the two year smog inspection procedures are more strict in highly populated counties. Where I live the test involves running the vehicle on a chassis dyno at two different speeds. In other less populated counties non-dyno methods from the 1980's are still applied. I cannot buy lacquer or acrylic enamel paints where I live. I can drive 15 miles to the next county and the paint store will sell me anything I want.

Wha? Yeah, no I'm sure are (mostly) agreed. Although, suggesting people move away isn't any help. And the last thing anyone needs is the expat wackjob Californians setting up shop and implementing the same psychosis in relatively sane states. No, we don't ****ing care how you used to do it back home. At some point, they shouldn't be allowed to leave
