Over Head Console

SAY! I want to put an over head console in my 97 Lariat maybe with the compass and the temperature display . Is it doable ? I found one at the Pic A Part this weekend. I got all the mounting hardware and some wiring .

Just asking before I tear in to it . Wondering if anyone here has done this before .

many of them were self contained... the compass was part of the console... all you do is run a power wire to the unit and a couple wires to a temp probe up front of radiator area ........ you can power up the unit on the bench and test for sure.

I basically did this to a 2010 EDGE that did not have compass and temp.. Instead of console I used a GM rear view mirror that had everything inside.

That's a good idea" I never thought of that. I don't know if I want it for the compass & thermometer or the factory look of the console . I transplanted a O.H. console in my 92 Conti it was just the compass . It was plug and play the wires were already there. I was hoping for the same on the Lariat
don't think I'll be that lucky . Never the less it's going in . Thanks for the insight

Are the 97-98 ones the same as 99-03? From what I've read in the parts catalogs, the F150 and Expedition/Navigator use the same display unit in each sub-generation, but I cannot seem to find out if the signals are the same between 97-98 and 99+. Sadly, my truck doesn't have the wiring for it (was a December 96/January 97 build...). Would be awesome to have the tripmeter/compass and I found a 99 Navi at the junkyard with one...

So...WILL IT BLEND?

you basically need a power wire +12 v to make the compass work, then two wires to a thermocouple up by the front end for the temp.......... NOTE... some trucks/ cars had a portion of the compass in the console and some in the dashboard area.... You need to make sure the console is self contained and needs nothing but a +12 v wire ... Most on e-bay will tell you this..... power up and see what the display says.

Got a feeling it needs more than just power and ground ran in order to make the tripmeter work, which is what I want the upgrade mostly for. as for the ambient temperature sensor, that's cake to wire up. Might even put two in and a switch to switch between inside & outside temps being displayed.

So you got me thinking again and I ended up tracking down ALL of the service manual ISO torrent files from the legendary (and very gone) FordCDs.com site. Anyone want to help seed it?

I'm sorry, I meant to say Travel/Trip Computer, the device that shows your average fuel economy, instant fuel economy, distance to empty, etc.

How exactly would that work? Logic would say that it would need to be fed information from the PCM, and presumably a 99+ Trip Computer would be expecting data from a 99+ PCM.

Who has the 99/00-02 EVTM CD/DVDs? Can I get a hookup on it?

if you have the 99+ service manual CD/DVD, could you grab the overhead console pin out for me? I just finished tracing out the 97-98 version

What would be a good source to find a wiring diagram for the overhead console including the thermometer ?

Since I only had the 97 surface manual CD, I just went to the local library and grabbed the diagrams from their Chilton database. Turns out that all 97-02 consoles are wired the same, except for those with the ambient temperature sensor display (00-02). 97-99 has the temp sensor wired into the digital climate control system, while 00-02 has it in the overhead display.

for the ambient temp, I just ran two wires above the head liner to the drivers door post... down the post behind the trim, then out the firewall by the brake pedal... run the wire up to the headlight area and put the temp probe where it will get fresh air and not engine heat.... +12v wire at the console area powers the display for the temp and compass.

Well after checking into the mounting situation I find I'm going to need the headliner . I found one from a 2000 same color as mine. The next challenged will be trying to wire it up like factory. Going to the salvage yard soon to see if I can't get some pointers . Might get lucky. Either way it's going to happen

Does anyone know where the temp sensor would be for the thermometer? Is under the hood ?
