When he asked if there should be lining on the band was the dead giveaway that there wasn't any (I assume).

Sounds like that would cause some horrible grinding squeaking noise Happy he found it. Just not what I had in mind when thinking of a whirring noise. I worked as a both a dealer technician and at a private shop for almost 10 years when I was younger. It was often very difficult to get good descriptions of noises. I recall one customer recorded the noise and played it back for us to hear.

I mean you specifically, Abe. I know the lining sometimes has to be replaced because I've done it. But you said in a later post that it's fixed. So, that's why I am confused.

The noise is no longer there. It looks like there is some sort of lining there. I did not take it apart. The brake holds real well. Years and years ago I worked at a lumber yard and those types of parking brakes never held on the trucks we delivered lumber with. Now they were bigger trucks and hauled heavy loads but I am impressed with the holing power of this brake on my truck.

Mine worked well too. And I thought it was in good condition until I took it apart. The reason it worked so well was that the worn out lining was allowing the rivets to dig into the drum. Of course, that's not noticeable while driving because the brake is released.

It was worn so that the part of the lining you could see bulging out to the rear looked thick. If I hadn't taken it off the tranny, I would never have known it was worn out.

But, now that it's like new, even with all the torque this little 226 has, I can't move the truck if the brake is engaged.

So.... you are saying that is an upcoming project for me? Wow! There are so many more things to do on each of my trucks.

Well, of course, I don't know that. It might be in fine shape. But I'm betting since it was making a noise until you changed its position, it's worn out.

The above post from Joe (Harrier) has links to both our experiences replacing this brake lining. His will be more like yours, I think. But we both referenced the instructions detailed in Earl's World on this subject. http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/Page11.html

And I found the materials needed at McMaster-Carr.

Pull the transmission cover, go for a ride and see what it sounds like.
