Could a guy get a bore scope down in there? Not sure you would get much more than a slight profile of the lifter lobe but you should be able to see the cam lobe fairly well? Guessing the damage would be somewhat mutual to both surfaces to some degree.

seams like the Oil Pan Drain plug has a Magnet captive in it as well
