Really hate asking this question

I have a 1977 f-250 with a 400m. Where can i order a thermostat from these days. I have read a bunch of threads about them and feel more confused then when I started. I keep reading all the good ones are discontinued but all the threads stop a few years ago. So...... where do I order from and what do I ask for?

if all else fails call a local napa or some such parts store and compare part numbers.

you'd be surprised how many different vehicles one thermostat part number fits, for instance the one for my 390 cross checks to something like 20+ ford vehicles 15 chevys and a bunch of dodges...

but i digress phone calls are cheap insurance call summit or any number of parts places and get the info you need. they have phone numbers for a reason

Order from NAPA worked fine for me. The special stat for the 400 is not normally a stocking item.

Napa for me too. Make sure it has the little "bell" on the bottom as not all of them do

The local speed shop has them in stock, however I’ve purchased a 195 degree Mr gasket 4365 thermostat from Amazon recently. $16.99 free prime shipping.

Nobody here is running 160F degree tstats though, do they? My understanding, is that they are bad for sludge formation and engine wear.

I have the strangest ford 400 problem on the planet. On an 85 degree day, the engine will only heat up to 155 degrees if I leave the radiator uncovered and use a 195 degree thermostat. So I can’t use a 160F thermostat, however I did use a 160F in my 1997 f150 for 150k miles. When the mechanic rebuilt the engine he said that it was the cleanest he had ever seen.

Apparently the guidance from my speed shop was not bullet proof. Mr gasket 4365, Mr gasket 4365 & Mr gasket 4365 does not not have the 11/16 flange at the bottom. It shuts the bypass closer to operating temp. I will be changing to a NAPA thermostat With the correct flange.

Interesting. Is it because the engine is running too cold?
