pulling steering column

i have been a bull in a china shop taking apart some of my 68 ranger braking stuff that wouldn't have been broken if i knew what i was doing. my question is i'm pulling my steering column to paint and replace the rag joint, is there just one bolt to loosen just below the rag joint to pull column through fire wall? if so any special procedure to pull it after loosening bolt?

thanks dave

Dave, I believe there are 2, but it has been a while since I did it.

Things to take loose to pull the column:

Two bolts at the rag joint. Four sheet metal screws on the column-to-firewall seal inside the truck. Two bolts holding the column tube to the underside of the dash. Two wiring connectors going from the column to the main wiring harness under the dash, one flat, four terminal moulded bullet connector plug on the top, lower end of the column (inside the truck) going to the NSS/backup lights and the shift linkage/linkages at the lower end of the column, on the engine side of the firewall.

You're welcome. I just did this over a year ago when I replaced my stock '69 F100 fixed steering column for a tilt column from a '78 F150, added power steering and a disc brake front suspension.

there is a bolt head just south of the rag joint that does not have the normal hex head, if this is loosened will the steering column pull out off a (after all other firewall, wiring and linkage connectors are undone)? looks like proper 7/16 socket does the job on the special bolt head

The 12 point bolt that holds the rag joint coupler to the steering shaft should be removed completely before you pull the rag joint coupler off the end of the shaft. I found out this weekend after applying a gear puller to the coupler that there is a shallow detent milled into the shaft where the bolt runs through. Thankfully, I don't think I wrecked the splines when I pulled it off.

Regards,
Corey
