I don't think anybody makes a coil-assisted damper for the front of an AWD Aerostar. I think there may not be enough room for such a configuration; the damper body is really close to part of the cross member.

You're probably right. I got lucky and found an AWD aerostar in a local salvage yard, so I'm pulling the springs from that. But I sure would like to find a better solution. What a pain in the butt this rebuild has become!

Check carefully for broken coils on the top and bottom. VERY common Ford trait and the Aerostar is no exception. Especially if you live in a region where rusting is common. Ford had many recalls for this over the years. One coil on each of mine is broken and this area is not what I’d consider ‘rusty’. The broken coils is why I haven’t replaced the control arm bushings yet.
