Steering Box Question/ Problem

Just rebuilt the steering box in my 46 half ton and now can't get the sector shaft/ worm gear to adjust properly. Setting the adjustment up with the steering centered I get a bunch of slop left and right of center. I'm stumped. Anybody familiar with these boxes and can guide me to a solution? I'd sure appreciate any help figuring this out.

Starting to think the new worm gear is the culprit....duno.

The more I look at this, the more inclined I am to think the worm is the problem. Thinking the gear must be cut wrong, causing the slop when it's turned either way from center. The slop is the greatest at extreme left or right getting progressively tighter when approaching the center position.
First time I've encountered this....lucky me.

The kicker is I had to wait a month to receive this gear due to it being back ordered, now I get to do it again. Hopefully, I can return it and it won't be back ordered this next time around.

The gears are cut that way from new. There is minimal clearance at center, then progressively more clearance away from center. You don't notice it when driving because the toe-in and caster make the car want to steer back to straight when you are in a turn. Your parts sound good to go.

Well shucks! I had no idea...

I understand the tendency for the steering geometry to self center while the vehicle is under way so can understand not feeling the slop then. I never noticed or thought to, that there is much more slop when the steering wheel is turned fully in either direction while the vehicle is at rest.

I very much appreciate the education 38 coupe!
