Hi, I read in the forum that this problem is probably caused by the multifunction switch (turn signal switch), but the details on how to fix this were a little sketchy. Does anyone know the best way to tackle this job, starting with how to get any necessary covers off! I am obviously not master mechanic, but I do like to work on stuff myself and save money doing it.
In case the info doesn't show up below, I have a 97 Ford Explorer, V6, 4WD, 4 door, automatic transmission. Thanks for any help provided!
Try cleaning it first. Spray electronics cleaner into the multi-function switch via the four way flasher switch on top of your steering column. Spray the cleaner while repeatedly pushing the switch in on and out. Only takes a couple of minutes and a couple of dollars. Worked for me for about 2 years now.
If the emergency flashers work normally the multifunction switch is most likely the culprit. A haynes manual will tell you how to remove the switch and an "Electrical & vacuum trouble-shooting manual" from www.helminc.com will tell you how to test it with an ohm meter. Probably could'nt hurt to try Masons idea.
Thanks to Mason. I used the Electrical Component Cleaner and problem solved. $9.00 for the cleaner at Radio Shack and 5 seconds to fix. Had I taken it to the dealer - they would have done the same thing but charge me $300.00. Thanks Again!!!!
