Trans shifting issues
I'm looking at buying an 84 f150. It has the C6 trans behind a 302. The owner says the trans shifts fine but you have the manually shift it. What would cause it to not shift on its own? I have a 95 f150 with a manual trans so this auto will be new to me. Thanks in advanced.

Check the vacuum hose which goes from the carburetor base [rear?] to the modulator attached to the transmission. If the hose is loose or the modulator is defective, shifts can be slow and late. Also, if the hose is loose, your engine will have a vacuum leak and run rough or will idle at a higher than normal speed.
