That explains the light blowing out, but not the designed operation of the radio.
The newer model light switch has an extra contact that the pre '87s don't have. The radio may work hooking it up to the older model switch (mine worked with the old switch), but you'll always have the light glaring at you when it's dark, it won't dim out when you hit the headlights like it was designed to do. Call me a perfectionist, but when I had the chance I "fixed" the glaring glow from my dash. I had enough glare from oncoming headlights, I didn't need the help from the radio. It was bright.
The website is good, but it's going to confuse you. You don't have the '87 and up harness.
Turn the radio around and look at it from behind. The leads connect on the right of the radio. Speakers are the harness on the far right. The power and dimmer use the connection next to speakers to the left.
The top is hot all the time, the third one down is hot with the ignition in accessory. You can try hooking up the dashboard lights to the next (fourth) tab down.
This is where I feel the newer switch is necessary. The fourth position is meant for a dashboard dimming circuit, not the dashboard illumination. The newer switch has a position in the connector for the dimmer circuit. When you take the newer switch to parking or head lights, the indication on the radio dims out and the button light up. The older switch doesn't have this feature, so the indication doesn't dim.
The best thing I can think of running a wire from the dimmer **** for theinstrument cluster to the wire that controls the dimmer effect on the radio display (only if no other solution can be found). Yes that means another wire running across the back of rhe instrument panel or under the dash, but if that is the only other choice no other options are left, there is no other choice. Hopefully somebody can help better than I can.
tried the radio in my truck i could not see nothing in the display im now looking for another one of the same model and hopefully by then figure out how to connect it.
