First major in a while

Been out for a while as all has been well, but now I've reached another 6.0 milestone. At 260k miles, I've had a lifter failure. Truck was running when I took it in but is not now and we're not sure why. It still has oil pressure, so it's not the old needle bearing into the LPOP trick, yet at least. The question is, is there an upgrade on lifters? My plan is to replace all of the same side lifters, if he can do it with the cab on. If not, I say replace all 8, even if it's true the you have to pull the engine and tranny apart to get to 7 and 8. Any opinions? BTW, it's number 1 that needs replacing.

If the roller on the cam end of the lifter is the fail point it has probably drug a rut in the lobe on the cam. Unfortunately, if that has happened, your repair is going to get a lot more complicated and expensive.

I've read those part number lifters are common to several different engines, if that's correct there should be several options in the aftermarket. If the cam turns out to be ok, I'd replace every lifter I could get to. I think that's all but the back four or possibly eight, there are 16 in a full set. The replacement pushrods (origonal to the 6.4) are also .050in shorter, reducing preload a little, you may want to consider replacing the full set of those also.

Thanks, Rusty. That's what I'm thinking. I say replace everything in there that might reasonably need replacing, as the labor to tear in down and put it back is going to be lots more than the parts. If I just fix what's broken, then there's no reason why 2 through 8 won't go out next week and require the same labor. That's what they call "penny wise and pound foolish."
