Do I really have to.....

I have a bad lifter in my 460. The consensus seems to be that if you replace one lifter you must replace the cam and all the other lifters. It seems that a new lifter will cause rapid wear on the associated cam lobe and lead to rapid failure. Is't there a way around such a drastic repair for a single component? Is it possible to rebuild the collapsed lifter and reuse the original casing and go on from there?

I've installed new lifters on an old cam several times with no problems, but never on a 460. There are definitely problems with using old lifter on a new cam. If it was a customer's car I would recommend both to be safe. That's too much work to do again for free!

Thanks for your response. This is for my truck. I am about to pull the intake to upgrade the fuel injection and it would be no big deal to replace the one lifter. Obviously it is a lot more work to pull the cam out of the front of the engine and replace all the lifters on a motor that the PO said was just rebuilt.

i would not recommend it, but, i had a friend with a 76 ranchero stuffed with a HO351C, it had a lifter fail, i told him it was the ideal time to get a better cam and change to a roller setup, but he didnt want to get into all that..so he just replaced that lifter and put it back together....it goes against all the mechanical fiber in my body, but he did it anyways....and honestly, he drove that thing for quite some time with no problems, and he didnt baby the truck, thats for sure.......................

Putting a new lifter on a used cam will not cause any problems provided the cam lobe itself is not damanged. The lobe and lifter face establish wear patterns that preclude reusing old lifters on another lobe. New lifter have no wear pattern and are slightly convexed to allow rotation on the tapered cam lobe. The new lifter will wear into the old lobe with no issues provided moly assembly lube is used on the lobe and lifter contact areas...

There has been a rash of poor quality lifters in the last several years. I would check them all for unusual wear as well as the cam while it is pulled down.
