If you have one of these trucks you really do need a scanner. You can burn through a lot of money just guessing what the problem might be. An Autoenginuity scanner with the Ford Bundle can be had for about $369.00 from RiffRaff. You can quickly spend that on bad guesses. Good luck. Jim

Do you know if that scan tool covers the older power strokes like the 96? I'm sure it's limited if it dose since 96 was the first year of obd 2

A scanner will tell you nothing about fuel pressure. These motors are so simple i think a scanner is worthless, only thing I've used is a mechanical HPO gauge I had made 10 years ago for cheap.

Save your money and just ask on FTE.

Okay, changed the pump, filled up the canister with diesel and wouldn't start. Shot some WD in the air cleaner and it fired up. Ran for probably 2 minutes and started running out of diesel. Now it wont start, it tries. Smoke coming out of the tailpipe, letting me know the injectors are firing. ???????? NOw what?????

Is it full of oil? Have someone crank it while you check the fuel pressure.

Yes, its full of oil. If I'm still not getting fuel into the the filter housing when I have the top off. That's tells me I have a restriction in the tanks or the valve that switches between tanks. Ive tried it both ways.

Okay, I disconnected the line from the tank at the valve, vavle had been bypassed, attached a fuel line to the line, going to the pump, blew through it and got bubbles from the bottom of the fuel canister. stuck end of line into a 5 gallon can of diesel and cranked it. got bubbles in the canister but level did not rise????????

Prolly still have air in the lines. They take quite a bit of cranking to purge the air once it's in there. I was leaning toward a fuel restriction somewhere after the new pump didn't fix the problem.
