rusted bed rails.
Good Day,
I believe im using the proper terminology here, the rails, bars, brackets, whatever you may call them that run perpendicular to the truck frame that hold the truck bed to the truck, seem to have a major rust issue. i noticed the pile of rust in the driveway this morning. The worst 2 are the ones right at the wheel wells, for obvious reasons, they take on the majority of the water/salt spray. the truck bed isn't moving, however the bed has a soft spot in the area of where the picture was taken at.
My question is, what kind of a project is this to replace these bad boys, id imagine removing the entire bed at least. What is the proper name of those bars so when im calling around looking for them , i know what im talking about.

Under truck bed support rails? I don't know but I doubt you can just go buy them from ford. They are an integral welded on part of the truck bed, could be wrong. If the bed itself is worth saving then I would use a pneumatic cut off saw and replace all the bad rails with 3/16 angle iron or whatever shape it takes. You would just have to get the bed off and figure it out.

i was thinking of using 1 5/8 uni strut , weld it then coating it if there was nothing really OEM , or if its a integral part of the bed. Grind all the old stuff off and start over. The bed itself is in very good shape for being 16 years old. i feel it would be worth saving.

I brought it to a local body shop to fix. the bed was removed, underside sandblasted, cab-back frame sandblasted/painted, he made new rails from a sheet metal press, welded them in, painted and back together was 1,000$.

I did this last summer (texas tech diesel linked to my post)
It was not a hard job at all. You will have to buy or make the rails and new bed bolts and nuts (the Dorman kit had all of this included).
