I have a 75 f250 4x4. Dana 60 front and rear.
I was trying to pull out a stump and I think something broke in the front end. If jack up a wheel and engage the hub, the wheel will spin maybe half a turn and something binds up. Spin opposite direction and same thing. Tried both wheels. Same thing.
What do you think I broke?
It was late last night and I was in the middle of tearing out a tree so concrete could be poured, so I haven't tried that yet. All I know is something popped in the front end and also in the rear end. The rear end seems to turn fine, but I think I'm going to pull the axles just to check.
You said "when you jack up a wheel," so does that mean you tried both wheels with the same result? Was the t case in 2wd or 4wd when you jacked then up? The only thing I can think of, with an open front differential, is that you have damaged the teeth on the ring and or pinion, or the spider gear, and pieces of metal are getting lodged in between the teeth and preventing the shaft from rotating. Not sure though. It could be something similar in your locking hub as well. If you heard things pop in the rear, you need to pull cover and drain the oil, there is a chance you sheared a tooth and if the metal is allowed to bounce around, it could do serious damage or lock your rear end while you're driving down the road, potentially killing you.
Sounds like you blew a lock in out, if the front axle u joint passed a "not blow visual inspection". I'd get the 4 prong socket and take one hub/spindle apart at a time and get in there and look around for stripped parts.
Didn't get a chance to tear into it this evening, but I forgot to mention that even with the hubs unlocked I could only turn the front driveline a little bit without it binding.
Definitely going to pull both covers and see what's going on.
F150 D44 front axle...under a parts truck. I never knew it was like that and somehow the 4wd worked good enough to drive it on the trailer. I do not know how it worked.
It was discovered AFTER I sold the running gear to a fellow FTE member to convert this 2wd to a 4wd. I then gave him the good stuff out of a bronco D44 and the ratio matching 9".
Then later hooked him up with a rear D60 w/leaf springs and the 8 lug D44 front outers to make his truck a F250.
Haven't looked at the front axle yet, but pulled off the rear cover to see what happened there. No metal pieces fell out. Turned the ring gear and spider gears multiple times and everything looks good. Removed the drivers side axle. Nothing I can see there.
Seeing I was backing up while pulling, you think something with the brake hardware hung up and made the popping noise?
