I'm removing the 400 v8 that the PO stuck in my 70, and replacing it with a 460 out of a 77 van. I have a front sump oil pan from a 73-79 2wd F-350, and the stock 2wd 460 engine mounts and towers. I have the 400 and C6 out, and just removed the old towers today.
The left side tower is no problem, as there is only one place to bolt it in, however the passenger side (right) has two different locations to mount the tower, one about 2 inches in front of the other one. The old tower was bolted to the rear set of bolt holes.
The big question: Which set of holes do I bolt the passenger side engine mount tower to? No guesses, please, (I don't want to pull the engine back out when I discover someone was wrong.) I'm looking for someone who has done this swap, or maybe someone with a 73-79 with a stock 460 can go look at their truck.
Hmmm, that is a tough one. I pulled my motor last saturday and pulled the shells off of it. I dont remember being able to move the shell to a different location, however there is other holes for other style mounts. If you can, call around to local rebuilders and see if they will give you a junk 460 core so you can put in just a bare block to get everything figured out. I had a spare one laying around, and trust me, there is a big difference between mocking stuff up with a #750 motor, and a #150 block. Also, depending on the year of the block, and its origional application, there might be some differences in the casting and machining for the motor mounts
