Problem: Motor won't start or turn over
What I have done:
New seloniod(Sp?) Didn't help
Had starter Checked still nothing
New 4 gauge cable from seloniod to started still nothing
What happenes: everytime the i try to start it the seloniod makes a clicking sound.
Battery is good because it gives me headlights at full brightness adn all lights and radio work.
no i have not, but i will in the morning.
Colossus,
why would they have anything to do with the motor starting over-asked in a non-offensive trying to learn manner.
Well, like I said, I have seen stuff like this before. I do lawn mowing on a commercial and farm basis. We got a JD 175 that is tempermental. Lots of electrical problems. Anyway, every spring the thing gets hard to turn over, or it just won't turn over. Check battery, solenoids, fuses, the works. Check the plug - fouled. New plug - runs like new.
Not to mention, it was the one thing you didn't check yet.
If that doesn't work, check the distributor.
what you need to do is check all your connections from the battery to the solenoid to the starter, maybe sand them for a better connection and make sure they are all tight. I had this problem on my truck before. Especially check the connection on the starter, sometimes oil gets all over mine. Also you should sand all the connections on the solenoid.
so it wasnt a connection? Sounds exactly like what mine did, tried to start it and solenoid just clicked. Bought a new solenoid but it ended up being a connection, anyway good luck.
amx,
i haven't done anything yet, but all of the cables are new, and crud free. but there are some other wires that connect to it
this is what i replaced, and this is what clicks:
all the connections are good.
Since you have good bright headlights I would rule out the battery, the battery positive wire, the battery negative wire and concentrate on the starter, starter power wire, starter ground provided by the starter mount bolts, the starter relay and its ground provided by its mount bolts.
Take a jumper cable and connect one end to the battery positive post, then with the truck in neutral and wheels chocked or park brake on, touch the other end to the rear large post on the start relay ( the relay you show in the picture).
If the starter turns the wire to the starter, and the starter and its ground are good.
If it doesnt turn...touch the jumper cable direct to the connection on the starter.
Starter turns. cable from relay to starter is no good.
Starter doesnt turn....bad starter or ground.
Now if the starter turns when you touch the wire to the large rear terminal of the relay.....jump the 2 large terminals of the relay together.....
If the starter turns the relay or its ground is the problem. The ground is provided by the case of the relay thru its mounting bolts...so clean up the metal contact points very well and try again.
Let us know the results.
