Body mount replacement

I bought a 1978 F150 4WD SB a year ago from a guy that had purchased it two years earlier from the son of the deceased original owner. Truck is an original Arizona truck and has never left the state. Came with a bunch or replacement parts and a book of receipts. The original owner had apparently added all kinds of stuff to the truck and the guy I bought it from said he had removed at least 1 mile of wire and numerous fuse blocks. The one thing that struck me as odd was that the 2nd owner had not installed the new poly body mount kit. The front right corner drooped about 1/2 inch when looking along the line of the body. I thought maybe he was just lazy.

After researching the installation I discovered it was not a simple unbolt, jack the boy off the frame project. Not willing to completely remove the cab after watching the U-tube videos showing how to pound the mounts apart, I thought there had to be an easier way.

I came up with a body mount "puller" that does not require the cab to be removed. It is a simple fabrication of 1/4 steel plate that allows you to pull the bottom mount free of the upper one using the mounting bolt. No pounding required. Out of the 6 mounting points I had to cut one with a sawzall but I doubt it would have come apart had I used the usual cab removal/pounding approach, the other 5 came apart readily. I had one that the mounting bolt was damaged beyond reuse but ACE had that covered.

Probably try to create a U-tube vid to explain this. Point is you do not need the remove the cab.

If I can get to it I will post a couple of photos if the truck next.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by having to pound apart the rubber mounts to separate. When I replaced the ones on my 78 F150 I just simply unbolted the cab at all 4 corners and the rad. support. Then I jacked the cab up a few inches and supported safely. And the rubber mounts came apart with easy. However I did have to replace the rear cross member that the cab bolts to since it rotted beyond repair. I had a useable one from a 250 4x4 that I used. It just required me to drill a couple of holes in each frame rail to bolt it into place. I need to do this since the 150 cross member is different from the 250 cross member.

When I built my puller it was just a piece of pipe that fit over the bushings and was capped on one end with a hole in it for a bolt to run up into the bottom of the mount.

on these trucks it is quite common for the metal parts of the rubber body mounts to become rust "frozen" together

I see. Sounds simple enough. Thanks for the idea!

I hope the drawing is not too technical..... Just three 1/4 plates welding together with a 1/2 hole for the "drawing" bolt. Spacing between the ends should be just enough to allow the puller to straddle the bushing. Recommend the width of the puller at about 2 inches.

I am always amazed at the kids working in stores these day who cannot figure out what to do when you hand them a $5 bill, a quarter, a dime and two cents to pay for something that costs $1.37....

Math is going in a downward spiral real fast. I blame common core. It's the worst kind of arithmetic ever. But, for some entertainment though-

If you think the math is bad, just wait. A local former news anchor posted on facebook where she over heard her son telling his hair stylist that the school (that he at least attends) doesn't teach cursive hand writing anymore. Her rant on the post and how she feels about it was quite eye opening. Especially when you consider that she was a news anchor living in the Pittsburgh area and is originally from California.

There are certain places where our children learn how to behave and interact respectfully with others. Church and school are the obvious front runners, as are doctors' and dentists' offices, favorite restaurants, and on teams where they have to follow other adults' rules -- without complaint. Me? I casually gauge my five sons' interpersonal skills at Supercuts, where Thank God the stylists have a sense of humor. Next to the borderline deranged enjoyment I get out of seeing the people in the sitting area watch wide eyed when my shaggy tribe walks through the door is my complete and utter amazement at what my boys are going to chatter about when they're getting a #2 in the back and scissors on top. And it was Ryan's casual conversation with his favorite stylist that had me choke on the orange lollipop I'd swiped from the glass jar on the counter.
Schools aren't teaching cursive anymore.
Wait. What? My Catholic School Bubble has surely insulated me from the real world travesty of the Common Core curriculum that's unilaterally determined teaching children cursive costs too much and is just a big waste of time. What's next to go? Washing your hands after using the bathroom? Flossing? Shoe laces? We can all thank a group of rocket scientists out of DC at a nonprofit called "Achieve, Inc." for this next phase of dumbing down America's children. Achieve. Now isn't THAT a kick in the pants.
The fight is on, friends, and I submit it's up to each and every one of us to stop the namby pambying of this youngest generation that now must wear a protective batter's helmet and chest pad on the pitcher's mound but is allowed to watch a backseat DVD on a half mile trip to the grocery store. And it's you younger parents who seriously have to right this sinking ship before it's not just cursive that vanishes like the velociraptor.
So... some humble suggestions from a mom who's Been There, Done That and has made far more mistakes than mistakenly chopping off her son's finger in a door:
-Your child can sit still for a haircut without an iPod.
-Allowing a kid to take a device to a restaurant is not only stupid, it makes the wait staff consider doing something unsavory to your food as the rest of us talk about you in front of your back.
-Rearranging your entire house so your toddler doesn't reach breakables puts THEM in charge. Spending a few weeks of following them around and saying the word NO has worked for generations. You should really try it.
-Spanking your child doesn't make you an abuser. It makes you a good parent.
-Reading books about parenting DOESN'T make you a good parent.
-Rushing gym shoes, homework or other forgotten items to school makes you an enabler.
-Enough with the treats. Give your child an apple and push them outside. It's amazing what wonders are out there that don't come with cartridges or ear buds.
-Encourage your kids to read. There is no other single activity in the world that will expand their brains or their vocabularies like reading.
That's enough preaching from me now. I need to get some stationery from my cupboard so Bobby and Christopher can write thank you cards for the First Communion gifts they received from family and friends. Funny, too. I'm thinking they're gonna write those Thank Yous in cursive.
