Tranny/Idle Issue?

Hey guys, call me a newb but I don't know what I'm looking at here...

I know its old and its carbed so warm up time is key but, even after starting my '72 and letting it warm up for what should be sufficient time I have a little issue and it goes like this.

Starts up first crank no problem, idles in park for 3-5 minutes, unless I feather the gas and rev it up before it goes into gear and immediately get it moving it wants to die in gear. Whenever I start applying the hesitators it wants to die again. I've gotten really good at driving with two feet and getting it in neutral to rev it up but its a little annoying if there is a solution I should look for. It does this for the first 10 minutes or so of driving then it seems fine.

I had a buddy of mine that's more familiar with these old trucks tell me there is a vacuum line that I should replace and that would take care of it but I have no idea where to look. Another friend of mine said to check the kickdown cable on the carb and again... no idea where the kickdown cable would be(Holley 600CFM if that helps). I can rebuild and sync a 4cyl carb bank on a bike no problem but when it comes to anything with 4 wheels I feel like an idiot haha.

Point me in the right direction fellas and if you need more info let me know.

Electric choke? Where is the choke plate when cold, after depressing the throttle once?

Agree, it needs a choke. Either electric or manual cable. Something to keep the RPM up a bit til it warms up.

Hmm a bad vacuum advance can lean it out also, plus if idling is set to low with carb air/fuel adjustment wrong can make it hard morning driving hard to get going.

The idle rpm should be 600 once motor is warmed up.

Morning start ups the Fast cold idle with auto choke after depressing the gas pedal and warming up as book says 1800 rpm. If to low then figure out how to set that up higher.
1/4" or screw back side of choke housing under it.
You can look this up if you can find it.

You learned now too turn a wrench on some little engine you like to work on Right!

I'd say it time for you to buy a truck manual book for this truck so you can then try to trouble shoot any problem that comes up.

And having one of these old classics theirs always something that need looking after. Most todays shop mechanics don't even know how to adjust or rebuild a carb.

And you have to find a shop that can work on this if you don't learn Right!

You have buddies saying it's this & that but it sounds like you don't really want learn as you just keep asking and not follow through.

By no means am, I trying to be mean or put you down, but just sayin the feeling I get.

We can throw all kinds of ideas at you but if you feel it's over your head then your back to square one like with your buddies saying what to do..

Hope you can do and check what's been posted so far and it leads to finding your cold morning driving issues.

None taken man, my manual is somewhere on the way to me and I'm just throwing my problem out there in case any one out there has had the same problem and has fixed it before I start trying different things. Basically I'm trying not to waste money and time if someone else already knows the remedy. I mean that's one of the reasons forums are out there right?

Okay good, I have a question for you, does your Holley have an electric choke or the older vacuum style choke?

1. If it's the older vacuum it may have the inner o-ring seal gone bad & sucking air causing the choke to not pull it open. Or the linkage has come loose.
2. If electric it's possible the wire power wire come loose or the inner coil spring
heating 12v element has burned out.

I'd remove air filter an then do your starting and watch what the carb choke butterfly does. How much the choke butterfly stays closed or open.

This is a good stating point as to what to do next or look for..
I guess you'll have to do this on the weekend or free time..
Let us know what's happing from here.
