I have recently installed a ford rebuilt 300, offy intake, holley 390, duraspark II ignition w/ vacuum advance in my 1986 f150 2wd. Before any of this was done, occasionally when the engine was shut off, it would continue to diesel for a few seconds, even with the keys out of the ignition. After the engine was replaced, it seemed to have quit doing this, which i figured was normal, since EVERYTHING was new.
However, the last week or so this problem has started to come back. I replaced the ignition switch, hoping maybe it was faulty, but this didnt fix it either. Anybody have a clue what could possibly be causing this? It is an intermitent problem... some days it shuts off like a new car, others it will run for 10 or 20 seconds with the keys already out.
check your idle speed, to high could cause that or your timing could be off, and make sure your not getting hot. getting to hot will cause that problem
Kevin, if you have any advice, let me know also. My truck idles between 800 and 900. It doesn't run hot, and the timing is as good as I can figure without a light (a little advanced from origional position I think). Very rarely, but once in a while my truck will run on also. I think every 300 I have owned did this to me at one point or another.
i've run into a problem with bad gas at some of the older service stations. that could be the problem if it is an intermittent problem. i would get a timing light on there just to be save. i ended up breaking rings and a piston from to much advance( stock piston and rings) thats what i get for playing to much
if you still have the information plate on the rad.core support it will tell you the stock timing and idle rpms. stock for my '83 is 6 deg btdc @800 rpms, and idle should be set at 600 rpms not sure what the efi engines are
