A while back, I replaced the transmission filter, drain pan (for one with a plug), and fluid, and noticed there was a lot more metal shavings than normal. I'm not having any issues, but I'm taking this as my cue to prepare for the worst. I had a few questions regarding the E40D. It's a 97 Ford F350 2WD, 91,000 miles XLT.
- Is the BTS worth it? I've read a lot of good things about it. But it is pretty expensive, and I don't want to blow the money on something that isn't any better.
- If the BTS isn't worth it, is there a better option?
- Am I going to be better off rebuilding it myself? I guess this is the cheapest route, but I'm no transmission expert, so I'm not sure it would be smart to just drop a transmission out without knowing what I'm doing.
- Would it be more beneficial to swap to a 5 speed? I think this is the most expensive option out of all of them, but I have heard that the 5 speed boosts gas mileage and longevity (assuming you take care of it).
If I'm gonna go the BTS route, I'm gonna do it hopefully BEFORE the transmission gives up completely, because I'll just drive the 6 hours to Lead Hill and have it done there.
A few years ago, I needed a tranny in my 97. Ford does not offer a reman Heavy Duty version of the E4OD like they do for the 4R100. At least they didn't at that time. They may now, I don't know. I know Swamps offers a good transmission, John Woods has a great reputation as well.
Well I talked to Ford today about it when I went to buy a VSS, and they said they only offer OEM reman units, no HD units. He said I could convert to 4r100 if I was feeling up to that challenge, but I'd rather not. It looks like BTS is the route I'll go, since it's pretty close by. Not sure when, but I'll eventually get around to it. My current transmission is still holding up, but I would like to get it fixed within the next year or so
