1998 Mach Radio Display

Our Mountaineer has the common radio display issue. Does anyone have a schematic explaining how to repair this? I've seen some pictures online, but do not see the parts mentioned. Do you have to completely disassemble the radio to access the board in question.

I just found this video and am hoping I can do the same thing to ours.

That's pretty similar to the repair I made to my former 1998 Taurus SHO with a switch back lighting issue. I took it apart and reflowed all the solder joints. When I got it all back together, it worked great and continued to work at least another 2 years - was still working when I sold the car.

Unfortunately it did not do the trick for ours.

Are the other similar radios with the same style connectors compatible with the Mach system?

After attempting to repair the power supply board it looks like the display is barely trying to work. Its only slightly visible at night.

I just discovered that Dorman offers a replacement power supply board. I'm going to try that. Its part number 586-001.

The Dorman replacement power supply board has brought the display back to operational status. There is an issue though. Now the button illumination is intermittent, meaning mostly it doesn't work.

The button illumination issue is likely another bad solder joint for a resistor in the button backlight circuit.

Do you happen to know where exactly to look for this? Also it appears 2 of the buttons are burned out. I'd like to replace the LEDs for them, or would it be a better idea to replace all of them?

LEDs typically will not burn out (in a properly designed circuit), at least not before most other components in the product have failed. So if you do find one or two bad LEDs I wouldn't bother replacing them all, unless you discover the new LEDs are more efficient than the old and therefore the lighting is inconsistent across the buttons. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the one or two that are not working are also due to a bad solder joint.

I don't know that there's a typical place for the solder joints to fail for the button lighting. You really have to just take the radio apart and inspect it well. If there's nothing obvious, then reflow all the solder joints. I did that many years ago on the radio for my 1998 Taurus SHO with the radio integrated in to the climate control panel. I didn't find anything obvious so I reflowed all the joints and it took care of the backlighting issue.
