2008 Mariner PATS code 16

Hello,

So I am having a huge issue with my 2008 Mariner which is a salvage title car. Out of no where it started having issues with turning on. i would turn the key and nothing. the radio and everything else worked but the car wouldnt start and i would get a -------- on the odometer. after researching and researching i found out that it is the PATS system and the code 16 is something along the lines of the pats and pcm connection failure. anyway, I have asked around to a ton of mechanics and no one seems to know how to fix it. I did a bit more research and found this video:


So now it looks like it may not be the PATS but the PCM OR it could be the wire harness to the PCM. Has anyone else had issues with this and if so where do you recommend I take it? Ford dealer ($$$$$$)? auto electrician? someone that works on PCMs? thanks!!

I read and had issues with my Focus there was a few Escapes also If I am remembering right.. Try pull the ignition tumbler, and turn it with a screw driver where tumbler would have turned it. In there, there is a part that wears out and the key don't turn it enough.See if it works Ill post the link and part name.

The PATS-related symptom is a byproduct of the underlying problem, not the actual problem itself.

The actual problem is that the PCM and the cluster are not powering up together so they cannot establish the necessary link to enable, among other things, PATS functionality.

A flaky PCM Power Relay is a common reason for this symptom. Try swapping that relay for a non-critical one and see if that moves the system. Mark the relays before moving them, don't want to loose track of which one is suspect.

There are other things that can cause it, but the relay is an easy DIY task and odds are decent it's the problem. Start there.

We see a lot of instrument clusters from 2008 Mariners causing this problem. Does the cluster ever fail to power on at all, or does it always show dashes on the odometer when this happens? Do your gauges ever fail or reset while driving?

Hello Everyone and Thank you for Replying!!

When this happens the instrument cluster always shows the ------- dashes and the PATS light goes crazy and give the code 16, but it never fails to turn on. Sometimes while driving, the instrument cluster will go crazy and turn on all the light as well as make the guages go up and down. we usually just hit the top of the cluster and it will shut everything off on the cluster then make it go back to normal. During all of this the car will still run like normal.

projectSHO89: I will try the relay thing you mentioned, i am hoping that it is that simple. the problem with this car is that the issue comes up whenever it wants to. Sometimes it wont happend for a couple days and other times it will happen 3 times in one day. I am going to take it to an electrician today to see if that works

we usually just hit the top of the cluster and it will shut everything off on the cluster then make it go back to normal.
That would indicate an intermittent electrical connection in the cluster. Probably a cracked/cold solder joint or a faulty connector pin.

So you think that is the reason that it doesnt start from time to time while flashing the anti-theft? Do you think I will need a new instrument cluster or will need to get the wiring fixed?

If the THEFT light is fast-flashing, then that's the evident reason for a no-start. You have to determine WHY that symptom is being manifested.

Contact Circuit Board Medics, they have in-depth data that I do not have.

You need to first determine what the actual fault is before it can be repaired. There's no way to do that via a keyboard over the internet, a skilled technician is going to be needed, one who knows what to look for and where to look for it.
