Think I'm settled on putting in a 460 and ZF5 in my '56 F600. I might go diesel later on but that has special issues and I'd like to at least be able to be on the road till I get to that path.
From what I've come across there is an extra weight issue with half ton suspension, but a 2 ton should be ok. Anyone know of any build threads or articles to look into for doing this swap? Fitment issues?
I really really hate to say this I have a 460 in a F3 and we did every thing known
to man kind; all vitals are excellent and It just will not do more that 4mpg if lucky.
Not only that, my 46 flathead will blow the doors off it. And then my F8 & F900's
I run 391's with overdrive perfect. These go in the 53 to 56's with no modifications
right down to original exhaust, mounts and all. Can't beat> around 9 10 mpg loaded
too! this pic is a genuine 391 in a 1953 (same as a 56) OR 360 361
any FE but you have to have the HD FT (truck exhaust manifolds)
to clear the steering box. Going diesel is not for the average Joe, cause
you have to replace the rear end just a lot of work and deep pockets!
I bought a 56 BBW F100 with a 460/C6 combo and a Chevy (mid-fifties vintage) rearend with 3.0 gears. I only ran it for a short while before I rebuilt the engine and then decided to go a different direction before I got the engine reinstalled. I can't say that I really monitored the MPG because I was having so much fun driving this torque monster that mpg just didn't seem relevant at the time. Fit certainly wasn't an issue but the straight axle/springs/shocks/bushings really needed some work as the weight did take it's toll. Luckily the truck came with the OEM power assist steering.
I will be. Still nailing the thing in though,so not much use to you. Mustang 2 front, Hedmann headers, custom exhaust, Ididit column, 3 UJs.
Good luck.
Thanks. No,I've got a Mustang 2 front with a rack, so no tie rod to clash with, unless we're talking bout different things(UK here). I've just used a rear sump pan( with associated oil pump pickup and dipstick). Oil pan clears everything easily.
NormalBloke - are there any laws/issues running an engine that big in the UK?
None whatsoever. I think there was a local chap who put a 27 litre V12 Meteor engine into a Rover car. You can never have too much power, you can always choose not to use it.
You might consider the price of fuel an issue, currently £1.15 for the good stuff per litre.
Man, that engine is beautiful. I love all the bling. Just enough, I reckon without going overboard. I love those hose fittings and fixtures. Looks tough!
Be sure to use a pre '72 IIRC timing chain and gear set. The cam was retarded on the later engines and they are dogs compared to the earlier 460s. Fuel mileage suffered with the retarded cam timing also.
