ok .. seem like I have a problem .
i pulled yesterday out of my drive onto a longer hill, doing about 45 to 50 and all the sudden my TC unlocked . Shortly thereafter OD light started flashing. Code P1728. I reset the code , but TC still does not lock up .
OD light came back on while driving .
Any Suggestions ? I can’t pull the tranny at this time , But I do need to drive every day 25 mls from and to work .. is it ok to drive without TC locking up ? If so, should I leave OD turned off ? I only drive max 55 due to back roads .
any advice is greatly appreciated .
You can drive with the converter unlocked. The trans will run hotter, but shouldn't get hot enough to be a problem. You don't need to turn off overdrive.
Is the P1728 the only code stored in the computer?
That usually means a problem inside the torque converter, or possible the seals on the input shaft, or even a stuck torque converter clutch control valve. Only having the P1728 code eliminates the possibility that this could be an electrical or electronic problem.

thank you Mark,
is there a way to pinpoint the problem without pulling the transmission ?
im just surprised it all the sudden happened empty and not 3 weeks ago when I pulled a very heavy trailer from Florida to Tennessee ...
also if I have to change the TC , where do I best get one inexpensive and what else should be done ? .. besides fluid and filter change.
Thanks again
stefan
About all you can do is to look at the front face of the torque converter. If the problem is the converter itself it usually will be slipping for quite a while before the code sets and it stops locking. That will discolor the front of the converter, which is where the clutch is located.
I don't have a recommendation on where to get a converter. You can just change the converter and the seals on the input shaft. Make sure to use assembly grease (Vasoline will work) to push the seals down into the grooves to that the converter doesn't cut them when you slide it on. Once it's running ATF will dissolve the Vasoline and the seals will work.
