I have a 2002 F-250 with the V-10. It has 49000 on it . The Cat has just been changed because when I test drove it the Cat was making a vibrating noise. Well to make a long story short it is doing it again. It is worse when the engine is under load and is intermitten otherwise. It's a tinny noise but something must be making it resonate. Any ideas!
Two things come to mind: 1.) Exhaust flutter normally related to the exhaust Y pipe configuration. I did not think it was a issue on a 02, only 99's and 00's. Will normally occur around 1800 to 2000 RPM's when you accelerate 2) Metal close out piece between transmission bellhousing and engine is loose. You can bend the piece away from the engine with a pair of pliers. Some folks have even bent the metal out and applied a bead of silicone sealer between the metal plate and engine.
I bent the shield near the bell housing back a little but still have the noise. Perhaps I need to bend it more or put a bead of silicone in there.
I had my truck in for some other service and just for chance told the the dealer that I had an exhast rattle. When I got the truck back the service guy told me that they loosened and re-tightened all the exhaust shields. The noise is still present. As stated about I'm going to monkey with the tranny shield some more and hopefully that will fix the probelm.
Just to verify that I have the same noise as the rest of you...the noise happens near 1800 rpm and only under light acceleration. I cannot reporduce the noise when in park.
I will check the heat sheild but the cat only has maybe 50 miles on it. Yes it happens about 1800 rpm when accelerating. Strange noise as it sounds as if it is real turbulent air passing and causing it to vibrate. I'll let you know what I find. It goes back into the shop on Monday.
I get the same sound in my 2000 F250. It started when I drove through some high water after coming off the expressway (drainage ditches overflowed). I was told it could have cracked the honeycomb inside the Cat. It sounds like a bunch of BBs rolling around inside a metal pan around 1700-1800 rpms.
