2016 Edge 2.7 L Turbo
Has anyone bought one of these and can anyone explain why the towing capacity is only 2000 lbs. compared to 3500 lbs. for the 2.0 L and 3.5 L models equipped with the towing package? Seems weird that a motor used in the F-150 provides less towing capacity in the Edge than the 2.0 L itty bitty motor.

They don't allow the towing package on the Edge Sport (and that is what takes all other Edges up to 3500 lbs). I would bet it has more to do with the 20 and 21" wheels and rubber band tires on that model than anything involving the engine. Do they use any kind of fancy multi-calibrated suspension that might also not handle the additional tongue weight?
Lincoln MKX offers the 3.7 engine as standard and the 2.7 EB as an option. I just checked their website and they seem not to mention towing at all... Doubt Lincoln buyers of any vehicle except maybe the Navigator would care about towing. But they may have buried the info somewhere.

Maybe the Edge Sport's performance suspension was not deemed compatible with heavier trailers, or the etronic sway control was an issue?
Actually I found trailer towing specs for 2014 Edge Sport (3.7 with 22" wheels) and the asterisk says no towing package with the Edge Sport with 22" wheels (which were standard for 2014)
http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/g...Edge_Sep11.pdf
Likewise the 2016 specs do not make the tow package available on the Edge Sport

I guess you have the choice of the Lincoln MKX if you want the 2.7 and a 3500 lb trailer capacity. The price may not be a *lot* higher than the Edge Sport(?)
Good luck,
George

It's dissapointing because if I got a new Edge it'd have to be a sport. But the Explorer does nearly the same. 5K pounds for every tow packaged Explorer, except the Sport, it can only do 2K. It's just a sign that Ford is putting big engines in these vehicles, but the rest of the running gear is the same and can't stand the abuse.

I'm guessing that the limits for the Edge are in the wheels and tires or something of that nature. Looking at the back of the Edge Sport, maybe the huge exhaust outlets on the Sport keep you from putting a hitch on

I presently have a 2014 Edge 4WD 3.5L V6 and tow a 2014 Ranger RT188 with a 90 Opti and it does an excellent job of towing the rig. My typical tow is a six hour drive. The vehicle is a company lease that is up on March 2017 and I might purchase the vehicle off the lease or buy a new one as I will then be responsible for my own vehicle and will get a monthly allowance and mileage.
