I replaced the EGR valve and still get error code 402. Racerguy stated that Ford just replaces the sensor when 401 codes come up, is that also true for a 402 code? Does the sensor just pull off the tubes? (2001 4.2 engine) Mike
Does your truck have any other symptoms?
A P0402 means the PCM thinks that there is EGR flow at an idle and there shouldnt be. If it idles smoothly the problem is likely the PFE sensor. And yes it just pulls off the tubes.
Thanks, just went out and bought one from Ford. The truck idled fine.....but at 65 mph / 1800 rpm, when I would give it slight throttle, it would ping bad for a second, then stop. Hope this solves that too! Been using super gas for a week to keep the ping away. Mike
I don't know if the 402 code sent the truck into some sort of "fail safe" mode, or if I just WANT to feel a difference, but *IT SURE RUNS GREAT NOW!* Response, power and fuel econ seem to be better. If I am just dreaming, don't burst my bubble. (OK, you can tell me)
Just registered tonight and I think you might be able to help me. I have a 1999 E350 Club Wagon with a 5.4 Triton V8. This aft my wife reported the 'Check Engine Soon' light being activated on the dash. Did the traditional 'check the oil' type of thing - all OK and the vehicle shows no sign of running poorly. Went to Schuck's and used their diagnostic equipment and got the P0402 code. Should I start with the EGR valve and if there is still a problem, move onto the PFE sensor? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Hi gnaydiuk and welcome to FTE
You probably just need to replace the PFE sensor.
That is relatively cheap and easy to do so it's a good place to start.
Thanks Racerguy...I replaced the sensor myself (cost $85USD) and then disconnected/reconnected the battery to 'refresh' the dash message. It has been two weeks now and all is fine. Thanks again for your help.
PS - I'm a BC transplant, now living in Oregon. We still get up there for summer vacations in the Okanagan each August. Best regards.
We lived mostly in Kelowna, but also had stints in Grand Forks (very nice) and Nakusp (so, so). Our favorite vacation spot is Mara Lake near Sicamous-I think we've been there 16 summers in a row now! Business takes me up to Mackenzie now and then thru PG and my wife's brother is up in Smithers but we've never ventured up there.
We left Mara just when it was really getting bad in Kelowna. It was very hazy for the entire two weeks we were there.
Mara Lake is a nice place
My brother in law works on housboats in Sicamous and a couple years ago we spent a long weekend in fall on one out on the Shuswap. That was great.
I dont like PG much but the drive from there to Smithers is pretty nice. From there it gets better though. Through Terrace and to Prince Rupert the scenery is great....in my opinion
I live in Terrace.
I haven't been to Mackenzie....just driven by the turnoff on my way to Dawson Creek.
What kind of business do you do there? I'd have to guess something to do with logging?
I work for a pulp and lumber products company - we have a pulp mill in Mackenzie. I'm in agreement with you about PG and that goes double for Mackenzie but, then there are others that just love it there. To each their own - I must admit I'm a little spoiled living down here. After Nakusp's accumulated snowfall of 13ft in 1996, we figured it was time to leave.
I'm a tech at the Ford dealer here.
I've heard that Nakusp and around there gets lots of snow. That's good for us snowmobilers
The Canadian record for snowfall in a 24 hour period was about 10 miles south of me at Lakelse Lake. I don't remember how much it was but it was lots.
We get quite a bit of snow here too but being sorta close to the coast we get a lot of rain too
Oh well...cant have everything.
