1979 f150 Column shifter problem

I have a 1979 f150 4x4 automatic transmission. The transmission has been rebuilt. I have only owned the truck a couple of months so I can't say yeah or neah. It had transmission problems when I brought it home. I have to jiggle the steering column or move it around in a certain spot while turning the key until it starts. If shifter is not right the truck sounds like the starter gong out. I can't explain it on here. Motor makes a grunt then silence. I keep moving shifter around until it starts. The transmission shop owner looked at it and said he had nothing to do with shifter. He says the truck is out of time causing the grunt. The time is set 1/2 inch high because when it's right on the money it almost dies. A friend told me the vacuum advance was bad so I needed to set it a little high. Anybody had this trouble?

Sounds like the shifter linkage needs adjusted where it attaches to the transmission. It also sounds like the neutral safety switch needs adjusted. Loosen the switch nuts/bolts Use a paper clip and stick it in the hole on the switch and rotate the switch until it lines up with same sized hole in tranny then tighten up and lastly remove paper clip.

I suppose if everything is out of adjustment it might be trying to start in gear.

As for vacuum advance a bad diaphragm can cause a hesitation when driving. Replace it and set the timing correctly.

Thanks for your response. I'll do it this weekend.
