im trying to find out what my tranny is,just baught a 64' with a 351w and a 4 spd on the floor ,does anyone know?on the tag its a "N" if that helps.im thinkin about gettin a 302 if it would match.and one more, what tranny would match to a 302,i got a c6 in my bronco i could tear out but if the one in my truck works then that would be sweet. thanks for the help, sean.
Hi Sean:
Welcome aboard to the group. First off, let me start by saying this may be best answered by the folks on the "transmission" board, but I'll toss in what I can. First off, are you sure the engine is a 351w. You can usually tell the engine line by the number of bolts on the valve covers (I don't recall the specifics right now though). I believe the 289/302/351w engine line are of the same bellhousing bolt pattern. With that said, if your C6 was off a "small block" then it should bolt to your 351. Of course, it may have been off a "big block" or an "FE", in which case it will not fit... Having access to the C6, measure the distance between the top two mounting bolts and let me know what you get. This will help telling what motor it's for.
Sorry I can't help with the 4-speed, I am not all too familiar with them.

ok so i measured it and i got 6'' give alittle cause i realy couldnt see it too good.and im sure its a 351w cause i was informed (unless the guy is wrong),that when the temp housing is on the front of the intake manifold that its a windsor.inform me if im wrong please.anything helps, thanks.
OK, here we go....Two things:
First off, on the tranny. If there is a flat top to the bell housing, and the bolt holes are 5 inches center to center, and there are two bolts holding the starter on, then it is for a small block. If the bell housing has a rounded top and the holes are 5 7/8 center to center and the starter has three bolts, then that is for an FE. A small block transmission will fit a 289/302/351w as they are the same engine family.
Secondly, a "wet" manifold does indicate a "windsor" (that's how I remember them) as opposed to a Cleveland, but on the FE engine, the water neck also goes into the manifold.
Keep us going, we'll get the answer.
ok im realy confused now,my old boss thats a ford guy told me if its a manual then its not a c4 or c6 but something else.this was a new one to me.anyway the guy with the motor said that if i have a windsor, and i do,then the 302 long block he has will fit,ok thanks for the help, sean.
Correct...
Specifically, a C4 or a C6 were the automatic transmissions, as well as an FMX and an AOD. The manual transmissions were three or four speed variety. Keep in mind, even if you have an automatic, it will still technically have a "bell housing", although that term is usually limited to stick shift cars.
Your 351w can be replaced by a 302 without any problem, they are the same small block family.
If you really want to have some fun...take the heads off the 351w and slap them on the 302, this will give you a similar engine to the 302 Boss
No sweat man, that's why we are around.. Have you determined that your truck is a 64 for sure? As far as deleting the forum, it will fall down the list as no new posts come on, just need to let it be. This also allows for future site searching of the past posts.
Enjoy! --MG
im not sure, this truck came from a auction and thats what the writing on the wondow said....the waranty # is f1odr591336,not sure if thatll get me anywhere but,let me know.
We're getting warm now... The vin reads 1965 F100 (F10) with a 352 (D) from the San Jose plant (R) built September 1964 (591336).
Tell me what the front axle looks like because the the numbers can sometimes be deceiving. If you have a solid axle front, end to end with leaf springs, then it is pre-65. If the axle is anchored with pivots at the end, this is the "I" beam which is 65 and up. Let me know, we'll get it ID'd.
--Mike
OK, so with the I-beams, your truck is 65 or later. I think the 352 looks like a windsor, but, one quick way to tell is look at the manifold. If the intake manifold extends under your valve covers about an inch, so that you would have to remove the covers to remove the manifold, then it is indeed the 352. Also look at the spark plug orientation. If they angle like "\\ //", then again, you are looking at the FE (352,360,390..) engine.
