I'm looking to buy a unibody (year not critical), and would like to know the typical spots to check for rust.
I live in a rainforest (well, almost) where rust really thrives, so this is my most important concern.
check along the front of the hood down at the very edge. for some reason alot of trucks rust along there look for bubbled paint and its always alot worse than it first seems also check the bottom of the doors.
Front edge of hood, as noted.
Doors (unique to the Uni), tailgates (unique and hard to find), bed floor, bed sides between doors and wheel opening, floors, crossmembers under cab, roof along drip rail, radiator support along bottom...that should be enough to keep you busy.
Best solution is to import a low-rust (no such thing as rust-free) Uni from a dry state like TX or AZ, they turn up on Ebay quite frequently. The $$ to get it to your home via shipping is easily saved in repairing excessive rot on a truck from the rust belt.
My '63 has a lot of rot on the core-support just outside of where it bolts to the frame, on both sides. There is also a lot on the front of the cab where the body mounts are welded up against the door pillar. The last place I found a lot was under the wrap-around rear window. The last two may not apply to most other trucks - mine was missing the original wrap-around rear window and had a piece of plexiglass gerry-rigged in; it leaked pretty bad. I couldn't find any problems at all with my bed except for the tailgate itself, it was a gonner. The inner fender-wells on most of these trucks are usually at least a little rotted underneath the battery because of acid leakage.
