Pam, your statement about looking forward to having it paid off, makes me believe I would keep it till its paid off. Then save your coin for a new one.
If the new engine has 3 Yr. warranty, I would keep it for a while. You weren't planning on trading it before the engine blew, right ??
You could always change your mind if the situation changes.
Best of luck with whatever you decide.
I work in the auto body industry, I can tell you I wouldn't touch the aluminum bodied trucks for at least a few more years. I can't tell you how many cars we actually fix for ford because the aluminum hoods on the expeditions and f150's. Now we haven't seen the 15 f150 have a problem yet but it's to early to tell. But I will say this, I bet your auto insurance will go up on these all aluminum bodied trucks before it's all over, shops are having to spend upwards up to 100k to buy the right equipment to even fix. Not trying to push anyone away from the aluminum trucks, but just saying we have worked on the new f150, and we charge more hourly to work on them
What I would do Pam- After the new engine is in, I would find a new '16 that I like and try to get it at a steal of a price. Negotiate hard, on the trade value, as well as the purchase price. If they won't come to your terms, walk, er...drive, as in the old truck. If you get a great deal, then why not? New truck, and new warranty. I would not be afraid of the '17, but it will probably cost you more down the road. Good luck.
The only negative Ive heard about the 150's are the bodys arent holding up well in the oilfields. With that said I would have no problem buying an F-150 or a 17 SD.

Very interested in this, but I can't find anything on Google, FTE, or any of the other forums I frequent. Can you post a link?
Andre, the way I remember it was ... you went in for an oil change and came out with a ram, cause it was such a good deal. Is that not correct ??
Dak makes is sound like I was bored waiting for my oil change to be done and bought a different truck because I've got a pile of cash sitting around. I know he kids, but man some people are starting to believe this story. It boiled down to someone wanted my Ford and was willing to pay for it and the dealership asked me while I was there, yes. My truck needed tires and the front end redone (maintenance: ball joints, rods, etc). The front end work was not something that was unexpected, but it was added expenses on top of the tires. I don't suspect many of you would have left driving the Ram as I did, but I suspect every one would have considered the deal (likely leaving with a 6.7 Superduty) as well and many would have taken the deal under the same circumstances. I was money ahead no matter how you look at it. The part no one wants to remember is I test drove a '15 6.7 F-350 Platinum as well and still drove home the Fiat
I came very close to a Ram twice now. Once in '10 when buying my second Super Duty, and once about six months ago. I don't really care about brand loyalty, I prefer to buy that which makes the most sense. So far that's been a Ford just about every time, but that may change.
As I mentioned on the phone the other day buddy, if Ford wasn't doing a redesign, I would buy a Ram this time around. I just can't buy the exact same thing I've been driving for 4+ years. I need a change one way or the other...

For me, this was the main motivation. I'd had had a lot of Fords and wanted a change. It felt like no change going from '11 to the '15. I know a lot of guys are going to point out the power bump up, but remember my '11 was deleted and limited only in fuel delivery for power. I just need (wanted) more of a difference and it just wasn't' there. Had that platinum been Silver, I likely would have bought it anyway...lol
For me it would be about trust. If my engine was replaced I would be thinking about it all the time, did they do it right, did they miss something, what was that noise, I never heard that before.
This is definitely going to be a factor for me. And I have trip to Vegas coming up in June where I had planned to drive my truck - now, I'm not so sure.
Also, I've been having problems with the AC, and it was just in the shop for three days getting a leaking evaporator coil and a bad blower motor replaced - both of which turned out to be ancillary to the actual problem, which still exists. The compressor turns off and on at will, with no rhyme or reason. I've had it in twice before for the same issue, once a computer reset fixed it and then a year later when it started happening again, they discovered a dirty connection and cleaning that fixed it for a bit. I was going to take it back to this week anyway, for that - just didn't plan on needing a new engine while I was there.
I have to say, the 2017 is growing on me. My only concern about the aluminum was more about material availability in the event of a wreck, not a strength issue. I have no doubt it will be fine in that regard. But I think I could get a better deal on a 2016. And I love everything about my truck, especially the way she looks - so finding a new one exactly like her would make my heart happy.

I think if could get a 2016 for around 30K (counting trade in), I'd be money (and headaches) ahead. Could have it paid off in a just a few extra years, which I'd be fine with. If I can't get the deal I want, then I'll hold on to Evelyn. Which my husband thinks I should do anyway. But we think differently about some things - he's a fixer, I'm a replacer.
So, while Evelyn's in the shop I've been driving a rental - a Ford Escape. It's a zippy little thing, and it's much easier to park and put all my bowling ***** in the hatch of it than throwing them up onto Evelyn's back seat. So I was thinking, well, maybe a whole 'nuther vehicle would work! Then, this morning, my mare is acting a little off - hubby was gone to work, and there sat the trailer, with nothing to pull it should she need to visit the vet. Mare's okay, I think, but that moment I realized I was sorta stuck - yeah, having a truck is not optional.

My 2011 6.7L diesel was test drove and purchased while having an oil change done on the wife's car. Had to drive home to get my 2007 F150. In May of 2012, my dealer was giving a great deal on the last 2011 they had on their lot.
The 2011 was the second time I've purchased a vehicle during an oil change.
I didn't have a pile of cash sitting around though. Justin or Roy fall more into this category. I'm still working for a living.
