So I fixed my oil leak on my 69 f100 with a 360 fe. Had to take the intake off and I pulled the distributor and marked the direction it was facing. Once I started it, it didn't want to idle right and died. I understand that I need a timing light. But I don't know how to turn the engine to top dead center. There is a white mark on the pulley or whatever it's called. Sorry for the poor details I'm not to great on timing.
Yes, Forest, you should adjust the timing.
You will see the static pointer. Clean it up and mark it with whiteout. Then look at the pulley underneath. You can turn the engine by hand until you see the engraving. Scuff up the marks with fine sandpaper until you can read what is there, then mark the 6* position of advance with whiteout. Borrow a good inductive timing light and clamp the sensor over #1 cylinder.
Time it at idle with the vacuum line to distributor plugged with a screw so that the carb is not sucking air. Be careful, keep you hands away from the fan.
Since you pulled the manifold, the problem may not be timing but a vacuum leak in your gasket installation. Be suspicious of everything you touched.
Come on back in and we will help you.
Turn the engine with a socket and a ratchet in the crank pulley, only the direction it runs. Align it to TDC (top dead center) as CougarJohn said. Put the distributor in with the rotor pointing to the #1 plug (follow the wire), start it and use a timing light to adjust. You may have to turn the distributor some to get it started. Check your oil pressure (the oil pump rod has been known to fall out into the oil pan).
