Does anyone know where/how to check the ATF in the transfer case? I found the lower drain bolt, but I don't see anything up higher that looks like a fill hole.
It's on the rear passenger side about midway up.
The hex is the same size as the drain plug.
Dip you finger in it to check the level. If you don't get any on your finger then as some fluid until you do, be careful not to overfill.
Matt
Matt is right, it is easy to overfill the case. If you run the fluid up to the filler plug, you will throw excess out the breather plug on top of the case.
Thanks guys,I will check it tonight. I searched for other threads on this topic and could not find any,so hopefully this will help others out there. Haynes book dosen't cover AWD,and the Popular Mechanics CD is useless. It only tells you fluid types and capacities, but nothing on locations.
SCCA28, I found about all the reference books at the local library, I couldn't check them out because they were referance only but they did have a copy machine for the "must have" pages.
Okay, found the fill plug (thanks!).I used a 1 inch socket to remove it,came out very easily. The level was a little low, took almost a half pint to fill it. According to my books the transfer case holds 4.5 pints,so I don't think there was any damage done. I have never had any problem to speak of,just wanted to keep up on the vehicle as I intend to keep it as long as possible. As a tip,I used a turkey baster to add the fluid,so no mess and I was able to monitor how much was going in by the "ounce" markings on the side. And if you add a little too much ATF, it can also be used to suck some back out. Just don't let the wife know you used it....
