Set a wrench light

So on my trip north today towing the camper I have set a wrench light twice. SGII is not reading any codes and temps look good.

Thoughts?

John

What were the temps? Scan Gauge is a terrible code reader, have Torque with you? What were the conditions? Truck feel good until that point?

My thoughts are that you need something better to read the codes.

If temps and deltas are good, my money is on the turbo sticking... But, if that was the case it would have likely went into limp mode... So IDK...

Mark, agree. Going to find one soon.

Deltas were 8-10 the second time it happened. The thermostat was acting funny the whole trip. It's a couple of months old and it was acting like it was sticking open. It dropped a couple times to 177* when EOT was above 200 and would come back up.

Turbo was acting fine and it was about 29psi when it popped the wrench the second time. Was going up a big hill in PA.

It felt like it went into limp mode. Lack of power. Pulled over, let egt's cool, shut down and restarted.

I will hit up some place for a better code reader and report back.

Auto Zone (and other auto parts stores) will read codes for free.

Yep, same thing mine would do when pulling. Time to clean the turbo more than likely. You could also look at EBP sensor/tube, and MAP sensor/hose, but probably a stuck unison ring. My .02.

Last year it had a couple of P0299's. Cleaned the turbo and replaced unison ring then. It felt different this time.

I will report more after a code reading.

Joy. I don't let the truck sit. Put almost 16k miles on in the 1st year. Once I clean it again, how do you prevent this from happening?

Really don't want to be doing this A-1R (annually or as required) But I will put it on the maintenance boards.

How often to you do WOT runs? That might help a bit.

This should be a W1... at least.

I get on mine often and even then, thinking that mine needs it now... three years since last cleaned

Had the same issue with my engine wrench coming on when pulling. A turbo unison ring fix. As noted in other threads, my last one stuck and it lasted only 20-25k after.
I replaced it and the fit is much better. I wouldn't be surprised if the OEM factory units come with just a bit bigger internal hole diameter now, knowing the consistent issue here.
Just replace it and save some time soon.
