C5 to C4 swap?

Hello,

I've got a '95 F150 with the 4.9 engine. The P.O. replaced the manual 5 speed transmission with a C5 pan fill unit. It appears that the flex plate, starter, and driveshaft were also replaced to accommodate this transmission. If I were to replace it with a later model C4, would it be a direct fit?

I've driven the truck with the C5 for several years, but it's pretty evident the installation was intended to be a short-term fix. It leaks, the shifts are sluggish, and there is a fair amount of noise and vibration coming from it. I've refurbished many of the other systems on the vehicle, so I am hoping I can affordably put in a rebuilt C4 to make a dependable daily driver.

Your feedback is appreciated.

1995 F150 XL: 4.9 engine, 3.08 rear, 2 wheel drive, short bed, C5 3 speed transmission.

You can put any small block bolt pattern transmission in there including the C6 or AOD though with 3.08 gears you really don't need an OD ratio, neither of these transmissions require any additional electrical connections and I think these would be much easier to find than a C5 or C4.

Thank you for the reply! You are correct about the C5 - they are much less available in good condition and that is leading me towards thinking about swapping in another unit. It is tempting to go with either the AOD or the invincible C6. But would the AOD or the C6 require any additional modifications\parts to fit within the space currently occupied by the C5 (flexplate, starter, driveshaft, etc)? Is a later model C4 directly interchangeable with a C5? I am hoping to reduce part swapping as much as possible to keep costs low and invested primarily in a quality rebuilt transmission. The truck is a daily driver that sees zero towing and about half city and highway miles (like 150 miles a week).

I don't know enough about these transmissions; any feedback would be appreciated!

There are no "late model" C4 transmissions those things disappeared in the '70s IIRC, but the C6 was produced right up until '96. Not sure about starters but differences in length may require a driveshaft change, but since the C6 was available in this vintage truck those parts are available so you don't need custom parts.
