Intermittent acceleration problems

Hi all -

I've done days worth of searching and research for this and keep finding contradicting information.

I have a 97 F350 Powerstroke. When it was brand new, I got stuck. I would press the accelerator, I heard the click of the pedal, and then nothing. No acceleration, no increase in RPM, nothing. Towed back to Ford and they stated it was a bad solenoid in the gas pedal. Repaired under warranty.

Now I am beginning to get the same problem intermittently, but it's always while the truck is in motion; occasional losses of power, as if I let off the pedal.

When I went to Ford, they said that there is no such thing as a solenoid in the pedal and that I need a whole new accelerator pedal assembly, at the price of $600 for just the part.

Research I do has shown it to be either the APPS or the TPS. What do you guys think? Also, I am learning that the TPS needs to be adjusted post installation. Can you point me in a direction to find more information on this?

I would really like to not spend $600+ on just a part when I can get the sensor(s) for a fraction of the price. I'm not being cheap, I just don't have the cash.

The truck is bone stock with no modifications, and I get no check engine light.

Thanks for the quick reply. It also does the same thing from a stop. Truck idles, press the pedal, click, nothing happens. Still no CEL. TPS still?

Most likely the IVS (the other sensor next to the APS)

Z31 - Thank you, I started fiddling with that switch and was able to duplicate the problem at will. The IVS is the one that makes the clicking sound, correct? Sorry for the dumb **** newbie questions; this is my first American vehicle and first diesel, so I'm playing catch up as quickly as I can.

Try soaking the ivs in contact cleaner and blow it out. The switch is obsolete.

Thank you, Mike. I'll give that a try. Locating a replacement is a pain, and the only alternative seems to be buying a whole new pedal assembly from ford. I did find a pretty impressive dust bunny INSIDE the connector.
