i have 2003 f-350 dually w/7.3l diesel engine. What turned out to be the heater control valve busted and the truck ran hot when i shut the truck down it blew out the radiator reservoir. i bypassed the heater control valve and repaired (temp) the reservoir. but since this happened it sounds like a pushrod is knocking. my question is would the running hot mentioned above be the cause for this?
The heater control valve wouldn't cause an overheat. In fact, very few thing can cause an overheat on these engines - particularly at idle. If the temp gauge didn't spike and the degas bottle venting is your only symptom, something else is at play. Couple that with a knocking sound under the valve covers, this could possibly be a loose stick and a cracked cup. If this is the case, fret not... I've fixed this on mine more than once - without pulling an engine or lifting a head.
More needs to be known before solid feedback can be provided. Any soot or other foreign matter (like fuel) in the degas bottle? How full did you have the degas bottle? Have you been under the impression it's not holding coolant and have you been topping it to the "cold" line? Was your cooling fan in high gear when the degas bottle vented? If you are unsure, then it wasn't. Engaged cooling fans are about as subtle as Donald Trump at the podium.
