I'm installing a AutoMeter tachometer in my 1989 F-150. The usual way to wire it is :
Green : Negative side of coil.
White: Dimmer switch
Red: Ignition switch key on
Black: Engine ground.
Now, I've read about some models coming out of the factory with tachs. Apparently, the wiring behind the cluster goes like this.
Would it be possible for me to wire the green wire of the tach to the dark green/yellow wire of the cluster instead of making a mess in the engine bay?
I tried that. The tachometer didn't work. I've read several posts about people having the same problem. Save yourself some time and aggravation and splice it off the coil.

Will do, thanks. Don't wanna go trough the hassle of removing the instrument cluster for nothing.
