Planning on buying a kit off of eBay to rebuild a d24 divorced transfer case, I have a couple of questions. Is a grinding noise at 45+ most likely caused by output shaft pilot bearings? Thick needle bearing looking things. Or the roller bearings? What is the most common problem bearing for these transfer cases?
Ford calls for 50 weight motor oil in these things... am I crazy? Or should I pay the money for sae 50 race oil?
I'm a little young for a d24... I'm a 90s baby... any of you older fellers want to school me up?
88 heavy half ton conversion 460 c6 and d24 with d60 and d44 axles
I have been running 85/90 W in my D24 since 1969. Ford used to call for it, back in the day, but now they seem to go for the light weight oils?? Must be some reason?

I bought a ebay kit an had a small shop supposedly install the kit. It did stop leaking gear oil tho. I know the shop removed the TFC as, I saw it when they were installing a yoke when, I stop by to see when the truck would be ready so, I could get a ride back to the pick it up.
The TFC was sitting on the asphalt ground just out side the shop away from the truck all clean. But this was out side there shop which made me think it was just hoses off as it looked damp. hmm
After getting it back from the shop and driving it back home, I did not notice it any quieter. And, I checked the rear output shaft still had up & down play not sure if it was about the same as before tho.
I could not do any work on it myself at that time as, I only had street parking then so could not do it with unknown down time. Plus not having a cradle for my floor jack to hold it in.
The D-24 seem to be making a lot more noise so came across a 205 & rebuilt it on my tail gate then got me a floor jack trans cradle for $25 bucks off C/List
I've since then installed a Dana 205 which is much quieter than the D-24 and with more replacement parts around.
The only different is the speedometer input cable end which you'll need to get an adaptor to use your D-24 cable screw on coupler.
If you live in a very cold part of the country then it may be worth going to 50wt. oil.

I only live in tennessee... I took my whole transfer case apart and never dropped it down. It doesn't split like some others you pull the Insp3ction plates and pull the shafts, drop the gears through the bottom and you're good. Did your tcase make a loud growl or just whine? I think a wHine would be normal, especially since the gears are as big as the state of texas. If theyou didn't fix the growl or play I don't think they fixed your case, or your shafts are chewed up... I've heard of that happening... they may have gotten a free kit. Like I said unless there something I don't know you don't have to drop the case.
I have rebuilt many of trans but never a TFC and putting in loose needle bearing is not ez while laying under a vehicle plus replace shift rails & seals if needed.
I like to do a compete rebuild job not hit & miss haft *** way. I've learned long time ago to do it right the first time once. In stead of keep messing with it until you get it right the 2th or 3th time around.

What noise did yours make that made you take it in?
Not really noisy but was starting to leaking more gear oil. Then about 5 yrs later was vibrating a lot from the tail shaft getting a lot looser with up & down play.
It must of been the rear out put bearing going out. I never open it just drop it into the junk box at the PnP junk yard.

I have rebuilt mine twice over the years. Complete removal, total disassembly, all new bearings, seals, and reassembly. Works just fine now. As Orich said, check the output bearing for play, and while you have it, out and apart, its worth replacing all the bearings, gaskets, & seals. Check the output shaft bearings for play, as those are the ones that can make noise.
