I have a no power issue with my gauge cluster on my 89 F250. About a week ago I noticed all my gauges stopped working so I rapped on the dash a few times and they came back on. This intermittent problem happened a few more times and then finally they went out for good. I've replaced the ignition switch, tried a different cluster, replaced my battery cables, checked my fuses, checked the connections on the back of the cluster, and tightened up all the grounds I could see. I'm not sure where to go from here. Anyone have any ideas?
Ya the speedometer works because it is manual. I figured it had to be a loose power or ground connection too, problem is I can't see anything. I thought it could be related to the ignition switch since one of the connectors was burned but i replaced the switch with a new one and found an un burned plug at a junk yard to install but the gauges still don't work.. The back-lighting and turn signals do work on the cluster but nothing else. The 4hi and 4low lights do not come on. Does anyone know how to test the connectors that plug into the back of the cluster or where it should be grounded?
Thank you Bill! I checked the fuse with a test light as you suggested and sure enough I was getting intermittent power out of fuse 18. I pulled the fuse and right in the bottom corner you could see a small tear. I'm guessing the tear was so small that if I pushed hard enough it would reconnect inside the fuse. I replaced the fuse and gauges started working again. Just goes to show you can't always just give them the look test because the tear can be really small.
