That's like my 2011 F150, if you do ANYTHING to modify that truck its voids the warranty. You can't change the exhaust, put a tune on it, put a "performance air filter" on it, no nothing, nada.
This is a LONG list of possibilities when it comes to oil consumption:
I guess a few other things to try would be: put in a K&N style filter to reduce vacuum, put the stock tune back on the truck....
Don't think will need to do anything more than go back to the 10-30/40 & keep an eye on things..
As mentioned later in the thread I post the quote from , Ford can not VOID the warr unless the mod has a direct correlation to the failure. IE: If you never check the oil & seize the engine, that is not covered under warr EVEN if the engine was consuming oil at a high rate. OK so that was not a good EXample but you get the drift.
Well I have only had it for about 3 weeks now, so I'm really not at liberty to say. When I got it I did a full synthetic change. I commute to work about 50 miles each way so it will basically highway miles on the truck.
I have been talking to different people trying to get an understanding as to whether lucas and synthetic is a good thing for this motor or not. I try and take really good care of my vehicles.
You sound like your are obsessive-compulsive like I am. I raised my first V 10 from 16K miles until it left home at 150+K miles. I fed it nothing but full synthetic oil and premium gas. I ran an OEM Brute Force Cold Air intake and had 2 washable filters-they were changed every 2 oil changes whether they needed it or not. I used a tuner and had it programmed for premium gas.Transmission fluid changes were always ahead of time. Coolant flushed and replaced every spring, differential oil changed, fuel filter changed every year, and on and on and on. The only non maintenance engine part I replaced due to a problem was an idle air control valve. The service manager at the dealership said I was the only one he ever saw "over maintain" a vehicle. The 6.8L is an excellent engine from my experience. With a used one, it takes about 2 oil changes and you'll know how well it was maintained. Your oil strategy will do nothing but give that engine it's best treatment. If it croaks and dies, you can by a remanufactured engine for about $3500 plus installation costs--then you can raise your new engine to be a good responsible member of society, go to college, get married, have grand babies, etc etc.
For those using multiple quarts of oil--that is really really wierd. You would think you would open the hood and see oil spurting out like a hole in the aorta. Please share with us if you figure it out. I can't envision how it does that without smoke or a clogged cat from catching oil. That's like those guys driving up to the convience store buying that oil in the black bottle with orange tops for $2-severely overpriced-while his Chevette is out in the parking lot doing it's impersonation of idling while billowing blue smoke as his girlfriend who weighs 300 lbs with greasy matted hair and bad acne , 2 nose rings, 5 piereced earrings, a bandana guzzling the cheapest beer possible while blowing off enough cigarette smoke to rival the engine is cursing him as they need to get to Wal-mart to buy her some new Spandex pants--size X-small!

I'm probably not at your level, but I'm in the ball park though...LOL!

Better quality gas makes a difference. Techron is a good additive to use.
Thank you for the info... Very much appreciated.

This was news to me and catch me off guard the first time I read it here in the forums... I love this place!
I have to say that it has only been a few weeks and I love this freakin truck. I have been missing out on the the build for quite a while. I love the simplicity of the build. Been crawling all around, in, and out of it for a couple weeks, and man it is a Beast. Solved most of the ailments it had and I got one more electronic issue with the back up assist and one other issue underneath and it will be riding like brand new. Sorry for the sidetrack banter...
I've done a fair amount of towing with mine and tried various grades of gas. Can't tell any difference in driveability or mpg between grades. It does like pure gas much better, but it's nearly impossible to find around here. 10% ethanol =10% worse fuel mileage, but that's a different rant.
I have also tried a few different brands of synthetic oil. I don't have hard numbers to back it up, but it seems like it burns more Mobil 1 than Pennzoil or Valvoline. I run 5w30 in mine. Uses about a quart per 2000.

Eric, do you use a tuner? With the custom tunes I can feel the improvements between the 87 Performance tune and the 89 Performance tune while towing, not as much as when running solo.

Don't you think that is more of the function of the tune than the gas
I think I see .5-1qt every 2-3k miles. it's hard to gauge now that i'm not driving it every day like I used to. I've checked it multiple times in the last 8 months it has not moved on the dip stick with maybe 1k miles in that time.
No tuner, so the stock tune doesn't take advantage of the higher octane. It's on my wish list, but I've been hitting the wish list pretty hard the last year or so and there is a limit.

Absolutely, but the higher octane tune without the matching grade of gas would be a ping fest and a lot less fun. So what I was saying should have been higher octane AND tune = improved towing performance.

Yeah, you have had a pretty good run on granted wishes lately!

I'm about that same level of oil consumption, .5 quart per 2.5k miles with mostly towing miles.
For comparison, I completed a 3700 mile trip last fall from Central PA to Gunnison CO & back. I added 1 quart of oil during the entire drive towing a loaded 12' enclosed trailer. 180K on the clock. Only time I've ever added oil between changes.
Update: well its been a couple hundred miles since I put the in the new PCV valve and hose. The consumption seems to have slowed down some. Over say 300 miles i've used about 1/4 quart so I'm much happier with that. Why does the Motorcraft PCV valve have little holes around the perimeter and the XXX brand not?
Thats good to hear Bronco. I need to chuck a new PCV in mine as well. And I believe you are correct on the little holes around the perimeter of the valve.
