What your getting out of there is probably soot. It's really hard to tell from a picture though. 1 year on exposed oil is a long time IMO. I do oil changes every 3k which is about every 3-4 months and the oil is still clear on the dipstick but turns the pail black.

I was being completely serious about changing your oil twice as often and nor worrying about what's left behind inside the hpo system. That puts you at 6 months on the oil and 1500 miles. Just my opinion of course

Go to fs2500.com, that's there main pitch, gets the soot out.

Byron, that one was to make you laugh and get some of that salt out of your lungs! Speaking of lungs and dirt (lol) a neighbor told me that we inhale seven pounds of dirt a year in our lungs. Its all filtered out thru our noses, skin, I forget what else he said! Man oh man, is that possible??????

I have a hard time looking at that and thinking my engine enjoys trying to run with that black of "fresh" oil.
I don't doubt that. When I had my hpop res off to reseal it I wiped the timing cover side of the resivour out. Holey schnikeys there was a ton of thick black nastiness. My oil changes stayed much cleaner longer for a while. Now 4 years later and it's back to black fairly soon. I change my oil usually before 3k . I may pull the resivour off and see how much sludge has accumulated again.

I would love to do a bypass system like Glenn usses!

If you don't like black oil changes maybe you shouldn't drive a diesel it's kinda the nature of the beast.
