Hey guys, just recently purchased a 95 f150 with an I6. I'd like to put a new exhaust system on it to make it sound better, some say no matter what you do an inline 6 will always sound bad. I think that's a big if, as in if you want it to sound like a V8, it will never sound good. I don't wanna go that route, I want to embrace the 6's unique sound as much as I can.
So my question to you guys is what's the best way to do this, I want a deep diesel resembling chug chug idle and also have a good sound at high rpms. I've seen quite a few that sound great at low idle but sound like a weedwacker when the pedal goes down. Also I cant have it too loud, my dickhole neighbor will be filing noise complaints like no tomorrow. Thanks
You have a few options with the I6, mainly because Ford used two separate manifolds, so you could run a dual exhaust if you wanted.
The I6 honestly isn't that loud, you could probably get away with completely removing the muffler if you keep the catalytic converters and just run a nice 2.5" or so pipe from the cat back.
I've got dual flowmaster exhaust on my 96 4.9 got a good deepish sound at idle and revving. It sounds nice working thru the 5 spd but it drones at cruising speed but not annoyingly.
My suggestion is to use the longest "Cherry Bomb" style glasspack that you can find. I used the Jones $35 from Summit muffler on mine and like the way it sounds. With the torque of the 4.9L you need not rev it high anyway. Sounds "diesel-like" shifting at or under 2000 RPM's. Mine is a 4x4 with 3.73 gears.
Had a single manifold straightpipe to a 6" stack (shut up, I was in high school) and at the right rpm under acceleration it sounded kind of like a tractor....
Currently I have a split manifold- duals to a couple fleet farm tractor mufflers (basaicly glasspacks but cheaper) to trumpet pipes 1.5" the hole way, and it sounds pretty good at idle and under load. But theyll never sound as good as my straightpipe Cummins or my v8s.
I just chopped my muffler off about 12" from the 2nd cat, I'm thinking about chopping that 2nd cat off but trying to figure out how I'm gonna keep that o2 sensor from tripping the CEL andkilling my mpg's
The PO of my truck cut the exhaust just after the muffler. Been asked what v8 I had under the hood. Sounds good at idle and just as good when accelerating
