Purchased a 2003 F-350 Super Duty last week. Noticed an electrical connector plug not connected to anything. Any body have any idea what it is for. It is on the passenger side of the oil filter as shown in the photo.
you also have the wrong oil filter cap and filter get and use the short motorcraft filter cap and motorcraft and or racor filters only for both oil and fuel the "will fit" oil filter caps and filters can and will cause problems
As I mentioned....just purchased this truck and I am new to diesel. Been working on gasoline engines for almost 40 years so I am accustomed to busted knuckles and dirty nails. If this plug goes to an EGR valve, where is the valve? I am currently experiencing a no-start situation below 55 degrees and I have to plug the heater in. I suspect the FICM, would this disconnected plug cause problems. The truck idles smooth and runs great after started.
Also, why is the incorrect filter and cap on the truck?
Forgot to mention earlier...this engine has 192,000 miles on it.
The egr has probably been deleted. You can get cheap aftermarket filters that come with cheap caps as well. Buy the proper ford stuff as quality is much better. I am guessing that's a 6.0L you have?
If you suspect the ficm you need a gauge that reads live data to confirm this scangauge II edge insight cts or one of the apps for a smart phone. You also need to have your batteries load tested separately and the alt as well healthly charging system is very important and most likely cause of the ficm failing if that is your problem. You could also next time it won't start heat up the ficm with a hair dryer and see if will start but you really need to see live data. Is the check engine light on and even if it's not you can still have codes. Have you had the truck scanned? The incorrect filters can actually cause a no start as well as the oil to bypass the filter entirely as to why it's on the truck my guess it's that it was cheaper than the motorcraft filter by a few bucks and whoever did it didn't know or care to use the right one.
Chances are good that the previous owner just went the cheap route on the oil filter and picked up an aftermarket wannabe at the local parts house that came with a new cap. Sadly, the old cap is now therefore long gone. We carry a replacement plastic OEM oil cap (and the filter for that matter) or you can go to a billet aluminum cap that is already plumbed 1/8" NPT for a fuel pressure gauge. Pretty sweet!
The issue is that the wrong cap and filter combination can cause a no start as well.

Hope this helps!
Welcome to FTE!
I found a delete plate today labeled "Sinister"....the EGR valve was eliminated. I am learning what an important role oil plays in a diesel.....and yes mine is a 6.0. Did check the FICM output voltage today. It was 47.9 at key on and 22.7 while running. Will be sending it in for a rebuild. Checked the prices for an OEM Motorcraft oil filter & cap today.....not cheap. Thanks for everyone's help.....much appreciated.
https://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/...c3z6766ca.html and you can reuse the cap you don't have to replace it every oil change you just have to use the motorcraft filter with it.
I would also suggest sending your ficm to the guy who posted above Ed @ ficmrepair.com
